God's relationship with Nature. Denied then popular notion of nature as a wise, benevolent, purposeful being. The only true efficient causes of things were the properties and powers given to matter by God.

De Chardin, Pierre Teilhard. Christianity and Evolution. New York: Harcourt Brace & Co., 1969.

Teilhard de Chardin (1881-1955) was a Jesuit priest, geologist and evolutionist and one of the most important religious thinkers of the twentieth century. He was also one of the first scientists to recognize the religious implications of our being part of an unfinished universe. His thought is especially important in the recent history of Christian attempts to integrate evolution into religious thought.
